Ufa

Ufa was founded in 1754 as a fortress to protect the eastern borders of Russia on the site of an ancient Bashkir settlement. Geographically convenient location at the junction of Europe and Asia on the banks of the navigable rivers Belaya (Agidel) and Ufa (Karaidel) made it possible for Ufa to transform from a fortress into one of the sixteen cities of Russia with a million inhabitants over several centuries.

Today Ufa is a dynamically developing metropolis, the capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan, an important transport hub, a major industrial, scientific, educational, sports, cultural and religious center of Russia, actively developing international relations.

Ufa is a city with a rich history that has been reflected in the architecture of our city – merchant mansions, century–old wooden houses, Soviet-built buildings seamlessly coexist with the modern architecture of the city. One of the greenest and longest cities in Russia.

The uniqueness of our city lies in a peculiar fusion of traditions and customs of many peoples, cultures and religions of the East and West. Representatives of more than a hundred nationalities live here in friendship and harmony.

Ufa is associated with the life and work of Sergei Aksakov, Fyodor Chaliapin, Mikhail Nesterov, Rudolf Nureyev, David Burlyuk, Sergei Dovlatov, Vladimir Spivakov, Askar and Ildar Abdrazakov and many others.

Ufa is recognized in Russia and the world as one of the leading centers for the development of high-performance sports. The names of Ufa champions are written in golden letters in the annals of world sports.

The life of the capital is filled with events of national and international scale. A large number of guests come to our city for large-scale cultural festivals, sports competitions, economic and industrial forums, scientific and practical conferences.
